Together, we experienced the inspiring blend of industrial history and modern workspace design at the tomorrow - LEIK Workspace Conference #2, held at LEIK Rottweil in the Gewächshaus in the Neckar Valley.
Keynote: Bernd Fels
Bernd Fels—an entrepreneur and forward thinker—is a co-founder of if5 and if5design, a consulting and planning firm specializing in new work environments in the DACH region. He is also the founder of spaces4future, a loose think tank focused on regional and urban development that takes a holistic approach to the topic of work. Under the heading “Let’s assume,” the group uses “real utopias” to look toward the future.
THERE ARE STILL SO MANY WAYS TO ORGANIZE OFFICE WORK.
In his presentation, Bernd Fels draws on 20 years of professional experience in the field of new work environments. Due to demographic trends, we are heading toward a stronger employee market that requires life-stage-oriented work models aligned with the desire for greater flexibility in terms of time and location. This includes hybrid work arrangements, which are increasingly supported by digital tools. Their use is accepted and demanded by a society that is becoming increasingly digitally savvy.
Hybrid work is always possible in multiple locations (working from home, in the office, in a coworking space, in a café, in the city, on a train, in a car, on vacation, on a park bench …) if the individual wants it and the organization and its culture allow it. Remote work will require fewer specific guidelines and instead rely on a shared understanding of work (Manifesto of Collaboration). Work will become much more flexible and situation-specific. This also influences urban and regional development. A shared physical space where organizations can meet will become all the more important.
Community and collaboration will take center stage. Depending on the task at hand and the situation, recurring, ritualized collaboration in a shared, physical space will be of central importance to a company’s success. This space could be one’s own office, which will undergo significant changes in terms of space and services. The principle is: fewer, but better and more sustainable spaces that offer an engaging experience and a pleasant environment for employees and third parties alike. However, it can also be a changing “third place” where people come together from time to time.
