Why do we actually commute to the office every day? Bernd Fels, a pioneer in the “Future of Work,” asked this question 15 years ago—and, through the “Third Places” initiative, envisioned the first village offices, as well as urban, corner, neighborhood, and mobile offices. Today, it’s clear: the countryside isn’t a place of retreat, but a space of possibility. New communities are emerging here—small but vibrant. Here, work can become a sensory experience again: with a view of the countryside, moving from the “black box” into creativity. Here, companies can put down roots—with headquarters in the countryside and satellite offices in the city.
